It’s the stuff that drives you into delirium, this insistent machine drumming. As an aesthetic fluidum it permeates the work of Christian S. – both the Cómeme’s artist’s productions and his DJ sets. It’s a tribal thing, after all. This summer, we witnessed Christian S. play a spellbinding set on the Croatian coast. Combining a sense of subtle drama with a deeply sensual touch, Christian S. led things up to a sultry peak when he played Ralphie Rosario’s “You Used to Hold Me”. In what mood where you as you did this mix?
Suspended somewhere between the cold and the warm, relaxation and stress, harmony and sonic distortion, joy and horror, today and yesterday. As befits this season and this year 2016.
Anything special you put in there?
Yes. You’ll find two tracks in there, students of mine finished it as part of the project “Adventures In Graphics And Sound”. I was overseeing this project at the Köln International School Of Design in December. Students completed those tracks in one day, based on graphical notations and field recordings.

The pieces “Dust” (0- 1:40) and “Come Dance With Me” (43:28 – 45:05).
As an artist, can you pin down what you are primarily concerned with these days?
Distortion, field recordings, drums and time.
Speaking of drums, where do you think it comes from, your knack for those hard-hitting drums?
True, I really like dance music that is into drums, like Man Friday’s “Love Honey, Love Heartache” or Dancehall like King Jammy’s Jack Slick rhythm. Drums are simple yet diverse, energetic and direct. Percussive rhythm is essential to what I do – it’s a sphere where everything can happen but nothing must. Then again, that’s something that applies to all of dance music I guess. I can’t imagine dance music without “hard-hitting drums”.
